Insights from Morgan State University: Donna Howard

Donna Howard, Director, Office of Development Morgan State University, spoke to the board about Morgan State University and some of the challenges facing historically and predominately black colleges and universities today. She stated that HBCU’s are having to deal with a highly competitive market for students while some face significant financial challenges. Many of the students that attend HBCU’s deal with financial challenges as well and depend on scholarships, grants and student loans to remain in college.
Donna shared information regarding Morgan’s value proposition –
- Morgan is a Carnegie-classified doctoral research institution offering more than 100 academic programs leading to a doctoral degree. The University has graduated more than 50,000 degree candidates since its founding in 1867.
- Morgan awards more bachelor’s degrees to African-American students than any other campus in Maryland particularly in engineering and the sciences and historically ranks among the top public campuses nationally in the production of black graduates who go on to receive doctorate degrees.
- The Morgan State University Foundation manages some 1,500 individual scholarship funds and awards more than $2 million annually in scholarships to low income, under-represented minority who are the first in their family to attend college.
